“I have been a witness, and these pictures are my testimony.” – James Nachtwey

I’m not big on describing my work. I don’t like artist statements. And I really don’t like discussing my vision.

I’m not even sure that I have a vision.

I take pictures because I enjoy it. I travel around the world (or around the block) because I enjoy it. I don’t think that there needs to be any deeper meaning to it.

Can there be deeper meaning? Of course.

But I don’t have the mindset that a photograph must have a specific purpose.

I’ve realized that I’m terrible at verbalizing stories and past experiences. I stutter, I change the sequence of events, and I omit things. A picture lets me show others where I’ve been, what I’ve experienced, and what I’ve seen, all without saying a word.

Many people see the same things in life, but showing someone how you see the world is an entirely different experience. There is beauty in the grotesque. There is a significance in all things living and non-living. I think the real challenge is whether or not  you can force yourself to see it.
